(monetary macroeconomics)

The Department of Economics at the Berlin Institute of Technology (Technische Universität Berlin) is looking for an economist to begin at the next possible date. The position is halftime and limited to 3 years.

Responsibilities:
You will participate in the research project "Strategic effects of liquidity injections, lender-of-last-resort facilities and monetary policy responses to asset prices". The project combines theoretical analyses of monetary policy with laboratory experiments. We provide you an opportunity to start an academic career and participate in the Berlin Doctorate Program in Economics and Management Sciences (BDPEMS).

Requirements:
You should have a degree in economics or related fields. You should have had a proper training in microeconomic methods, DSGE models, and models of financial crises. Knowledge in experimental economics is an advantage.

Gross salary is calculated according to payment schedule TV-L (50%) and ranges from 18,000 to 25,000 Euros per year depending on age, number of children and marital status.

Program Activities

MIUSA's Women's Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD) will bring together approximately 30 women leaders with disabilities from approximately 30 different countries, to strengthen leadership skills, create new visions and build international networks of support for inclusive international development programming.

During the three-week program, participants will take part in workshops, seminars and discussions, conduct on-site visits, and participate in team-building activities, to explore challenges and exchange strategies for increasing leadership opportunities and participation of women and girls with disabilities in international development programs.

The WILD program will include interactive workshops, site visits and practical activities on priority issues for women with disabilities, including:

* National and International Policies and Legislation, including the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Disability Policy
* Educational rights and opportunities including specialized and inclusive schools, policy and legal rights, services and accommodations for accessibility
* Leadership for economic empowerment, including higher education, training models, supported employment, microenterprise, private sector partnerships, career mentorship, skill-building, employment policy, and career development.
* Health and family issues including parenting, health care, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and violence prevention
* Using the media
* Coalition building
* Organizational development and sustainability, including funding resources and strategies, and fostering partnerships with community organizations and businesses
* Goals and action plans to promote collaborative relationships with other organizations for the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in international development programs.
* Inclusive international development, including exchanging strategies for inclusion with representatives from U.S-based international development organizations and/or human rights organizations
* Cultural and team-building experiences
* Mentorship and networking

Language

The official languages of WILD are English, Arabic, Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL). Participants must have at least conversational ability in English and/or be familiar with ASL.

. MIUSA uses ASL sign language interpreters who are experienced and skilled at providing interpretation for individuals who use different sign languages.

. Language and sign language interpretation will be provided during formal program activities, workshops, discussions and site visits only.

Program Cost

Accepted participants will be responsible for:

1. $250 USD program fee. Limited scholarships may be available based on applicant's demonstrated financial need. Applications for a scholarship will be provided upon acceptance to the WILD program.

2. Obtaining a current, valid passport and U.S. visa, including all related costs such as travel to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the home country

MIUSA will provide:

1. Roundtrip airplane tickets for participants to travel from home countries to Eugene, Oregon, USA
2. Travel health insurance during the WILD program

Which is Which? Student loans or Scholarship

The issue about the rising cost of education is not new for everyone, be it for rich people or for the those just barely earning a living.

However, this is not of so much of a threat for those who want to enter college but are not capable to meet its expenses. This is because of the two choices made available for them, first is the scholarship programs. And the second is the student loans. They may apply to either of the two.

Basically, the scholarship gives off monetary award which do not require the beneficiary to repay it. Unlike the student loan, the money that was lent to the students will be paid after some time with the corresponding amount plus interests.

Hence, it seems to be apparent that taking a scholarship program is more convenient than the student loan. Yet, you should know that both still consists of its advantages and disadvantages.

In scholarship, the students need not worry about finances throughout his college years. Almost thousands of scholarships are made available yearly. The systems of the programs depend on the financial needs of a certain student.

Although, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are not intelligent because you were not be able to acquire a scholarship. There are various types of scholarship, one is for the intellectuals who acquire and maintain high grades. The other is the specific scholarships designed for the ones who excel in definite fields, for instance, in the field of sports, math, science, music, stage performers and others.

Those who belong in average I.Q. may still win a scholarship. They may not possess the remarkable level of intelligence to win a scholarship, but their talents may secure them one.

Moreover, there are also scholarships designed for certain races, minorities, and other sectors of the society that needs monetary support. And scholarship is not just confined to college students, the students who would want to pursue further study may also benefit.

There are also several institutions that offer scholarship programs to their members, examples of this are the religious organization and union groups, etc.

Now, if you think you won’t be legible for any scholarship, there is still one option — student loans.

Student loans, as mentioned above is the financial aid given to the students to pay their tuition with the agreement to repay it with the corresponding interests in a given period.

Scholarships do not require for repayment, but student loans do.

The advantage of a student loan is that it will give you freedom to move as a regular student, without the pressure of maintaining high grades and you can do your other activities without thinking of the conflict in the training schedules.

The hassle is when you would consider it, student loans need to be repaid the moment you graduate; you have to pay to the very last cent plus the interests.

If you are the bread winner of your family, paying for it will be another burden though you already have secured a job.

Anyhow, it will depend on you, the important thing is you finish your college education and secure a diploma, be it from a scholarship or through student loans.

The achievement of earning your college education amidst the hindrance of money is the thing you will always be proud of.

New Zealand ASEAN Scholar Awards

The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholar Awards are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government's international development programme. They are managed by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

These awards empower individuals with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to contribute to economic, social and political development within ASEAN nations.

The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholar Awards recognise New Zealand's close cultural, economic, and geographic ties with South-east Asia. They seek to empower individuals to contribute to the economic, social, and political development of their countries.

What the scholarship offers

New Zealand has first-rate education institutions that offer world-recognised qualifications. Successful applicants will have access to excellent academic knowledge in quality facilities.

Scholarships include financial support for tuition, living costs while in New Zealand, an establishment allowance on arrival in New Zealand, and return airfares.

The partners of students are eligible for a work visa that allows them to live and work in New Zealand for the duration of their partner's study.

General eligibility criteria

The New Zealand-ASEAN Scholars Awards are open to candidates from the public and private sector including civil society, university lecturers, development-focused organisations and charitable foundations.

To be eligible, you must:

be a citizen of one of the eligible countries and have resided in that country for at least two years at the time of application
not have citizenship/permanent residence status for New Zealand or Australia
not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds New Zealand or Australian citizenship or permanent residence status
not hold or have held a New Zealand Government or Australia Government scholarship in the preceding 24 months at the time of application
not be seeking support for a degree programme already commenced
not hold a qualification at a similar level or in a similar field of study at similar level (this means holders of bachelor degrees should apply for Masters or PhD and Masters graduates should apply for PhD study)
be available to take up the scholarships in the calendar year for which the scholarship is offered
hold a bachelor degree of strong academic merit that is relevant to the proposed post graduate qualification
have a minimum IELTS (academic) results of 5.5 overall, with no band less than 5.0 and results to be no older than 24 months at time of application
satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand institution in which the degree programme is to be undertaken, including that institution's English language criteria.

Preference will be given to applicants whose study focuses on the priority sectors identified by each country. Please see country information pages listed above for more information about these priorities.

Preference will also be given to applicants under 40 years of age.

English language requirements

New Zealand tertiary education institutions set their own admission requirements for English language proficiency. All applicants should check the IELTS (International English Language Testing System, academic stream) or TOEFL (Testing of English as a Foreign Language) score required for admission to their selected New Zealand education institution. As a guide, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, for postgraduate level study. Some postgraduate qualifications may require a higher score.

Candidates must provide the original copy of their IELTS or TOEFL exam result as a pre-condition of placement. Results must be no older than 24 months at the time of the scholarship start date.

Candidates who show particularly strong developmental relevance and applicability may be able to receive three months' English language training in New Zealand prior to starting their main academic qualification. Candidates with IELTS of 6.0 overall, with no band less than 5.5, should therefore still consider applying.

Terms and conditions

Studentship in Herbal Medicine

We would be interested in an applicant who would wish to gain skills in the development of clinical trial methodology within either Chinese or Western herbal medicine with a view to using the PhD to conduct pilot work that would support a subsequent definitive clinical trial. The position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of environmental enhancement programmes for socio-economic advancement, particularly within a Singaporean context. The Research Associate (RA) will primarily work on two projects, the analysis of the Government-Corporate-Civil Society (GCS) model, a variant of the better known Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, and in a related capacity analyse PUB's cutting edge Active, Beautiful, Clean (ABC) programme. The RA will also draft and edit project reports, develop research papers, and support the development of related research, identifying the role of communities in urban water management, especially in challenging social-political-environmental landscapes in urban areas. The candidate will also be expected to participate in some of the outreach programs of the Institute in the area of urban water management.

Duration

The position will be full-time for 1 year, with possibility of renewal depending on the quality of work.

General Requirements

The successful candidate will be an accomplished researcher. He/She should have a strong background in systems thinking and system dynamics modeling. Added assets are experience with seeking and managing research grants, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and experience in research collaboration where currently employed.

Essential Qualifications & Requirements

Postgraduate degree (master's degree or above) from a reputed university in a relevant discipline with a strong background and competency in one or more of the following areas: environmental sociology, water governance, and water policy.
Broad understanding of public policy in Singapore and one or more Asian economies and background. Background in water resource management and policy will be a desirable qualification but not absolutely essential.
Publications in reputed journals and presentations at international conferences will be a benefit, but not necessary.
Demonstrated experience in research, field work, data collection and synthesis. Experiences in conducting ethnographic interviews and SPSS skills will be advantages.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently

About the Project

Water management and allocation decisions, such as finding new water supply sources, implementing water conservation measures, establishing efficient water pricing, or re-allocating water among current users, require more complete information about the full economic value of water. However, the increasing use of economic valuation and applications in policy analysis often pose technical problems and policy challenges. The objective of this project is to explore the role of economic value of water in various water policy decisions.

Graduate degree in the areas of environmental economics, natural resources economics, economic policy analysis, or a related field.
Knowledge and interest in the areas of economic valuation of natural resources and cost benefit analysis.

Following events such as the summer 2007 floods in the UK and the publication of the Pitt Review there is great interest in the economics of flood prevention. In the UK insurance premiums are currently used to estimate the benefits of flood prevention schemes but studies in the US have found that the present value of insurance payments is less than the property price discount for living in an area prone to flooding. This PhD proposes to use nonmarket valuation techniques such as the hedonic price technique and choice experiments empirically to determine the economic benefits to households of protection from flood risk.

Applicants are required to have (or must anticipate having) an MSc in Economics and must have studied Environmental Economics and Advanced Quantitative Methods. Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems will be advantageous. Applicants should include a short 2-3 page explanation of how they would value flood risk using nonmarket valuation techniques.

Currently, I am looking for 4 PhD candidates to fill below positions in my group at ZMT:

The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) GmbH in Bremen is a member of the Leibniz Association, which is supported by the German Federal and State Governments. Through its research, Leibniz-ZMT GmbH contributes to developing science-based strategies for sustainable use of tropical coastal systems (www.zmt-bremen.de). The Coral Reef Ecology Group (CORE) at ZMT has vacancies for 4 PhD students within the following 3 new projects:

1. CANCOR (Carbon and nitrogen fixation in coral reefs - 2 PhD opportunities):

Several key coral reef C-fixing primary producers (e.g. corals, other invertebrates, macro and turf algae) and substrates (e.g. reef sands, dead coral and rocky surfaces), exhibit internal or external association with N-fixing microbes like cyanobacteria. Such association potentially facilitates primary production and growth, but there are no studies that address linkage of C- and N-fixation in coral reef organisms and their reefs and the controlling environmental factors.

Position A: C fixation in coral reefs

This new research project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), will quantify C- fixation of key reef primary producers, and how this contributes to overall reef C- fixation. Additionally, the influence of key environmental factors (e.g. light and inorganic nutrient availability, temperature, acidity) on these processes, both on the organism and ecosystem level, will be examined. This comprehensive dataset will help to gain new important insights in coral reef ecosystem functioning and resilience in a time of environmental change. Position B: N fixation in coral reefs

2. Coral reef adaptation strategies to carbonate chemistry changes along the Costa Rican Pacific coast (1 PhD opportunity):

This project addresses the issue of ocean acidification caused by anthropogenic emissions of CO_2 in the atmosphere. Many experiments have shown that calcification of scleractinian corals declines with increasing CO_2 concentration. The Costa Rican Pacific coast is partly affected by corrosive waters that well up along the coast and periodically expose reefs to pH values lower than usual and similar to those expected in a high CO_2 world of the future. With this project, we are interested to study the impact of upwelling on the metabolism of calcifying reef organisms and the adaptation of coral reefs to natural changes in seawater chemical composition. The work will be carried out in Costa Rica and in the ZMT laboratories in close cooperation with the Systems Ecology Group, the Carbon and Nutrient Cycle Group of the ZMT, and the University of Costa Rica in San Jose. The appointment is for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

3. BIOCORE (Biogeochemical Interactions Of Coral Reef Ecosystem engineers, 1 PhD opportunity):

Scleractinian corals and reef sponges fulfill key ecosystem engineering functions in tropical coral reef ecosystems, not only due to their high benthic coverage on the exposed (corals) and cryptic (sponges) reef framework compartments, but especially by substantially influencing reef biogeochemical element cycles. Corals continuously release large amounts of energy-rich organic matter into reef waters. However, our knowledge on the utilization of this energy source is largely limited to microbial degradation processes only. Reef sponges and their associated microbial community (i.e. sponge holobiont) take up large amounts of organic matter of still unknown origin and exhibit massive cell shedding, i.e. a constant release of particulate organic matter, suggesting the induction of a significant recycling ?sponge loop? for bulk and coral-derived organic matter within the reef ecosystem. BIOCORE will conduct integrated laboratory and in-situ stable isotope pulse-chase experiments to follow, in a qualitative and quantitative way, the cycling of coral-derived organic matter within coral reef biogeochemical element cycles and in particular the suggested ?sponge loop? induced by the sponge holobiont. The work for this project will be carried out at the Red Sea and in the ZMT laboratories. The appointment is for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

Requirements:

Applicants should hold a Master or Diploma degree in marine biology, ecology, geobiology or related fields and should ideally have experience with coral reef ecology and physiology. They should also fluently speak English and possess good scientific writing skills. A SCUBA diving license and the proven ability to successfully write scientific publications is an additional asset.

A PhD vacancy is available in the Mechanics of Materials and Structures research group at Ghent University. The position is a 4-years full-time job with the main activity on numerical research on blast effect on laminated glass.

The aim of this project is to improve the fundamental knowledge on the mechanical response of glass facades to air blast loading and develop an experimental and numerical framework to assess the blast resistance of different concepts of glass facades without the need for many large-scale tests.
The objectives therefore are:

experimental assessment of the blast response of laminated glass windows for use in large glass facades by widely instrumented small-scale air blast tests,
numerical modelling of the elastic, breakage and post-failure response of the laminated glass window with advanced finite element techniques,
large-scale experimental validation of the developed modelling framework for a realistic glass facade construction.

This is a PhD position for pure numerical research, the experimental testing will be done by the other PhD student. So, the PhD candidate should have a strong background in numerical modelling, fracture mechanics and finite elements (if possible cohesive zone methods and/or SPH methods). Finally, it is important to remark that although the research group is mainly working on composite materials, this is a project on laminated glass (and not on composites).

HENRI Program is collaboration between the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Regional Center for Food and Nutrition (SEAMEO RECFON) and the University of Indonesia, Andalas University (UNAND), the University of Mataram (UNRAM) and Summit Institute of Development (SID), and Helen Keller International (HKI). The Initiative is supported by funds from USAID-Indonesia.

HENRI intends to foster a cadre of Indonesian scientists and public health professionals engaged in the analysis and use of country level data for decision-making, program impact assessment and health policy. As an initial step HENRI has created a national level integrated database of household health and nutrition data from 1994 to 2007 containing approximately 1 million household records, and seek to enhance utilization of this data to address core issues in public health, and to support students and professionals in data analysis, interpretation and publication.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics presently employ approximately

How to Apply for a Scholarship: College Freshman’s Recipe

When we speak of college scholarship application, the burden is always on the parents. Since they have the responsibility over the education of their children and they know what will be good for them, parents apply personally for the college scholarship of their children.

What if we turn the tide? From primary to secondary education, your parents accepted the responsibility. But you are old enough to take care of a simple college scholarship application. It takes some courage, self-confidence, and some excellent academic records to apply for a college scholarship. Keep in mind that is you who will utilize the financial aid that comes with the scholarship and not your parents. Thus, applying for a college scholarship is now your business, and you can do it with less supervision from your parents.

The procedure for college scholarship application is similar when you apply for college. You need to learn every scholarship opportunity available and make a list of potential prospects that you think will fit your personal needs. Once through with the list, you need to create an application letter and state your achievements (good high school scholastic records and recommendation letters from your high school director and teachers) and you are now on your way on getting into college for less, if not for free.

The above-mentioned procedure is the most common way of getting a college scholarship. However, the chances of success lies in you, and you need to exert more effort to assure yourself of a financial aid when you go to college. To increase your chances, here are some pointers that you can consider:

You should start as early as your high school years. There are many college scholarships that open during your senior high school year. In addition, these financial aid programs are only open in a specific period of time. Once the application closes, you have to wait for another year before you can file for your application. Starting early will give you better chances of getting the best financial aid available.
Give importance to the scholarship requirements. Keep in mind that among all available scholarships, there are only few that will fit your qualifications. Read the eligibility standards of the college scholarship that you want to apply. If you found out that the financial aid does not fit with the qualifications that you have, search for another. Do not insist yourself on scholarships where your chances of success is minute.
Do not forget to complete the requirements asked by the college scholarship. Prepare the documents that are commonly asked by the scholarship grantee to its applicants.
Your application letter will be your “speaking alter-ego” to the sponsor of the college scholarship you have applied for. Thus, you need to create an application letter that will convince the sponsor that you honestly need the financial aid and you deserve to get one, state honest information in your application. Never include false information especially if your purpose is just to “flatter” the sponsor with your achievements.

After you followed the aforementioned recipe, you are now ready to submit your application to the scholarship screening committee. Be prepared for other requirements (such as interviews and examinations) that will determine if you are eligible to receive a college scholarship.

A number of fully funded PhD and Masters scholarships are available within the Joint Postgraduate Program in Mathematical Science of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Campus Morelia, and the Michoacan University of San Nicolas of Hidalgo.

The PhD scholarships are tenable for up to 3 years and have a stipend of 10,768 Mexican Pesos per month (770 US Dollars, equivalent to six Mexican minimum wages). The Masters scholarships are tenable for up to 2 years and have a stipend of 8,076 Mexican Pesos per month (577 US Dollars, equivalent to four and a half Mexican minimum wages). Health coverage will be provided by the Mexican social security system.

Course description:

The European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis aims at providing a high quality education in designing and assessing public policies targeted to the agricultural and food sector as well as the rural environment.  This European Master responds to the increasing need to better understand and anticipate the various and often complex socio-economic and environmental effects of these policies either in a functioning market economy as in the European Union or in economies in a development or transition phase.  The European Master offers a two-year academic curriculum with integrated and advanced theoretical, methodological and empirical courses in economics and  quantitative methods as well as in agricultural, food and environmental sciences, agricultural and trade policy, environmental and natural resource policy, rural development policy and agribusiness management and market analysis.  To connect theory and methodology to practice, a problem solving project is developed and presented as a master thesis at the end of the two-year curriculum.
The European Master is jointly organised by five leading European educational and research institutions:  the Corvinius University of Budapest (CUB) in Hungary, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Sweden, the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn (UBonn) in Germany, the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain.  These five partner universities are recognised worldwide for the quality of their educational programme and  scientific achievements in agricultural, environmental and economic sciences.  The required 120 ECTS credit points are structured into three blocks:  a minimum of two semesters of studies (55 ECTS) at a first partner university, as well as two semesters of studies (60 ECTS) at a second partner university, and two joint summer schools (5 ECTS) at partner universities.  The language of instruction and examination is English for most of the courses in three partner universities while it is either French at UCL or Spanish at UPC for most of the courses.  The Master degree is awarded as a double degree from the two home and host universities.
This European Master is accessible to candidates holding a bachelor degree or a recognized equivalent academic degree with a minimum of 180 ECTS or 3 years university study from an accredited institution, with sufficient undergraduate training in economics and  agricultural or environmental sciences, with an excellent scholastic average, and with fluency in English but also French or Spanish if attending either UCL or UPC respectively.

The Ancora-Khazanah Asia Scholarship is a collaboration between the Ancora Foundation and Yayasan Khazanah to allow Indonesians to pursue a four-year undergraduate education at leading Malaysian universities.

This programme supports Yayasan Khazanah's objective to develop future business and industry leaders in the region. It further provides a means for Khazanah and its group of companies to contribute towards the social development of the countries it has operational interests, especially Indonesia.
It seeks candidates with an excellent academic record and rigor in extra curricular activity. It is a highly competitive process. The Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre at Keele University has an internationally renowned research programme in chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders in primary care, underpinned by several existing and ongoing high-quality observational cohorts and randomised clinical trials, with linkage to medical records. The Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre includes a multidisciplinary grouping of clinicians working alongside epidemiologists, psychologists and statisticians. Our funding framework gives us a strong remit to increase research capacity by providing training opportunities and career support for early experience researchers.

The aim of this 3-year PhD studentship is to examine the role of health, psychological and lifestyle factors in determining mortality in older adults with musculoskeletal pain. With the support of the supervisory team, first of all, you will conduct a systematic literature review to identify and synthesise evidence on the strength and mechanisms of association between musculoskeletal pain and mortality, with particular reference to the potential role of health, psychological and lifestyle factors. Then, with the development of skills to conduct quantitative research, you will undertake a structured series of "mini-analyses" of the North Staffordshire Osteoarthritis Project (NorStOP) dataset, which includes survey and consultation data, with further links to mortality data. Using NorStOP data you will attempt to replicate the results of previous studies that have reported a link between pain and mortality and examine putative mechanisms of association. The specific objectives of the study will be to test the hypotheses that:

Compared to individuals reporting no pain, those reporting regional or widespread pain have an increased risk of all cause mortality.
The risk of mortality conferred by musculoskeletal pain will be independent of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and educational level.
The relationship between musculoskeletal pain and mortality will be mediated via levels of psychological distress and physical activity.

Funding is available for three/four years to cover fees for PhD registration (2010/11 home/EU rates: £3,732) and a research studentship stipend of currently £13,590 per annum for 2011. Non-EU students would be required to pay the balance of the overseas fees themselves.

Applicants should have a good (2:1 or above) in a science/maths, psychology or health-related subject.

A Masters degree in a relevant discipline is highly desirable.

The Nanyang President`s Graduate Scholarship (NPGS) is a competitive and prestigious scholarship scheme designed to encourage outstanding graduates or final-year students to take their first step towards a leading research career by studying for a doctoral degree programme (PhD) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), one of Asia`s leading research universities. Funding will be provided for up to 4 years for NPGS awardees.

Number of awards available
Up to 30 NPGS awards will be made available in each Academic Year. Successful candidates will be known as Nanyang President`s Graduate Scholars.

Minimum qualifications
To qualify for a NPGS award, you must have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent at Bachelor`s level and applicants should also demonstrate excellent research abilities. The PhD research will be in any topic agreed between you and your chosen NTU supervisor within the research activities of NTU. At the time of application, if you have not yet completed your undergraduate degree programme, you will need to furnish documentation from your university that you are on track to get a First Class Honours degree or equivalent. Failure to do so will disqualify you from the NPGS award, in which case you may be considered for other NTU PhD research scholarships, subject to meeting the selection criteria.

Qualification
During the first year, you will be expected to take relevant courses and to work towards passing the qualifying examination. In the event that this qualification is not met, there will be no conversion to a Masters degree for the NPGS awardees.

Stipend and allowances
The NPGS award terms are:

Monthly stipend of S$3200
Full support of tuition fees
Conference allowance for two major overseas conferences in the 4-year period
One-time IT allowance of S$1500
Annual grant of S$500 for journal subscription or book purchase
Thesis preparation allowance
Priority for subsidized campus accommodation

This project is concerned with the reaction of mineral systems with CO2 as a means of sequestrating anthropogenic emissions of carbon. In the context of waste technology, the accelerated carbonation of thermal (and other) residues is a viable means to divert hazardous waste from landfill through the production of engineering materials. However the carbonation reaction (at normal temperatures and pressures) is limited by kinetic constraints linked to the diffusion and ionisation of CO2 in aqueous media.

The unique approach adopted by our group involves low water/solid (w/s) systems at STP, and the commercial potential of this approach for the treatment of waste is being realised. However, for the future development and wider application of carbonation in a 'low' technology, low cost approach, there is a need to investigate ways of improving the efficiency of the carbonation of waste.

The successful candidate will receive a £13590 per annum bursary plus a contribution of up to £4000 per annum towards the tuition fees during the term of the studentship, subject to performance.

Eurocancer  Stemcell Training is a network gathering 9 laboratories of 6 member  states at the highest level of cancer stem cell research. EuroCSC  training offers the opportunity to young researchers to join an  excellent training platform in this new area of Cancer Research.
An  Early Stage Researcher fellowship position is available for a period of  three years, tenable at Oxford University on a project entitled  "Cellular origin and molecular determinants of leukemic stem cells". The  position will be based in the laboratory of Professor Sten Eirik  Jacobsen and funded by the European Union Research Framework  Programme/Marie Curie Actions. This is part of an International Training  Network whose central theme is called 'Eurocancer Stemcell Training'.
DescriptionThis  project will use mouse models to establish the cellular and molecular  basis of collaboration between different classes of mutations in  preleukemic and leukemic stem cells. Mutations will be targeted to  different stages of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in mouse  models, to investigate how different primary target cell populations  impact on the cellular and molecular properties, as well as therapeutic  responsiveness of leukemic stem cells.
The Fellow will work in the  excellent research environment of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular  Medicine http://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/ at Oxford. UNIL Master's Grants

To facilitate access to Master's degrees by students with qualifications from foreign universities, the University of Lausanne makes available around ten Master's grants which are awarded on a competitive basis.

Programmes concerned

Candidates must choose a Master's programme from among those offered by the UNIL, except the Master of Medicine. The grant may not be used for any complementary studies required to enroll on the Master's degree and may not be used for EMBAs or Masters of Advanced studies.

Amount and duration of the grant

The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any). Abandonment of the programme results in suspension of the grant.

Required conditions

•The candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university.
•The qualification held by the candidate must be deemed equivalent to the UNIL Bachelor's degree.

Selection procedure

The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master's. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master's degree.

Job description
The successful candidate will join a research project funded by the Danish Agency for Science Technology and Innovation in support of the design update phase of ESS. The design update includes simulation of essential ESS components including the target-moderator and beam extraction system.
The project aims at interfacing Monte Carlo neutron transport codes for hot/thermal and for cold neutrons and applying these in the optimization of the target/moderator and beam extraction system of the neutron spallation source.
The project will be undertaken in close collaboration with the ESS organization in Lund, Sweden, and with other European project participants.


Qualifications
The candidate should have a PhD in theoretical or experimental physics with a strong background in computational physics or equivalent.

Within the framework of the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Scheme, a joint programme has been launched with the L'ORÉAL Corporate Foundation with a view to promoting the contribution of young women - from all over the world – in research developments in the field of life sciences.

The UNESCO-L'ORÉAL fellowships scheme focuses on UNESCO's premise that people are the world's greatest resource and that innovation and excellence, especially among the young women community, deserve to be supported and encouraged through the concerted efforts of the international community. The award of the fellowships constitutes a key strategy through which impetus is being given to the enhancement of the role of women in devising scientific solutions to problems confronting humankind in the twenty-first century.

TARGET GROUP

The UNESCO-L'Oréal International Fellowships are designed to identify and reward fifteen deserving, committed and talented young women scientists, from all over the world, active in the field of life sciences. With a view to ensuring that a balanced geographical representation is made, a maximum of three young women, from each of the five geo-cultural regions of the world, will be awarded fellowships.

Candidates must already be engaged in pursuing research at the doctoral or post-doctoral level in one or allied fields of life sciences including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy pharmacy and physiology. Projects involving animal models (i.e. experimentation using vertebrate laboratory animals) are rejected, and proposals in the area of cosmetics research are NOT encouraged; preference is given to non cosmetic research.

Special attention will be given to candidatures from the Least Developed Countries(LDCs).

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants (maximum four from each applying National Commission) must meet the following general criteria:

1. The National Commission must endorse all applications. UNESCO cannot entertain applications from individuals.

2. Candidates must be no more than 35 years old. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1977 will not be considered under this programme.

3. Preference will be given to candidates already possessing at the time of application a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in the field of the life sciences. However, candidatures from students pursuing studies/research leading to a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) will also be entertained.

4. Only candidates with the necessary qualifications, who demonstrate outstanding intellectual promise and personal qualities, will be considered under this programme.

5. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study.

6. Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

7. Candidates may not be in receipt of another fellowship/grant for the project or for the period covered by the fellowship application. If the candidate receives another award, scholarship or fellowship for the proposed research project, she should inform UNESCO immediately to verify whether her application is still valid.

CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATION:

1. Field of study: Life Sciences

2. Closing date for receipt of applications: 30 June 2011

3. The initial fellowship is for a maximum period of 12 months, for a maximum sum of $20,000. The fellowship can be extended for up to 12 additional months with up to $20,000 additional funding upon request of the Fellow and validation of the Selection Committee.

4. Duration of stay in the host country/laboratory:

At least half of the period of the fellowship must be undertaken abroad.. All fellows are required to complete the research project in her own country for a minimum of two months.

5. Possible date of commencing the project: Any time between 1 March 2012 & 1 March 2013

6. Applications for extension may only be made for the project for which the original fellowship was granted. To request an extension and additional funding, the following documents should be submitted 3 months before the ending date of the fellowship:

i. Three letters of recommendation issued by

(a) the host institution,

(b) the research supervisors at the host institution, and

ii. A research report on progress to date on the project and a proposal justifying the need for an extension with details of the work to be done.

iii. A budget estimate specifying how the second grant will be utilized.

7. Upon termination of the fellowship, the beneficiary must agree to return to her country so that the knowledge acquired may be put to good use in local research and training programmes.

THE RESEARCH PROJECT :

The research proposal should cover the following points:

• Why? The concrete nature of the proposed project's contribution to the life sciences; its innovative, original aspects; and the scope and purpose of the research project. The candidate should demonstrate that the reasons of the theoretical and practical knowledge or training acquired at the host laboratory would be beneficial to her on-going research project.

• What? The expected results or impact of the research project being undertaken.

• How? Describe the proposed arrangements for conducting the research.

• Where?The proposed country, where research will be undertaken and the name and address of the host institute/laboratory.

• When?The time-framework explicitly stating the proposed starting date and the suggested duration of research which should be of twelve months maximum. Because the possibility for extension exists, it would be useful also to give an indication of further development of the project beyond the 1-year time frame.

• How much?A detailed budget estimate indicating the resources required for the candidate to undertake the proposed research. The amount should not exceed USD20,000. All figures must be shown in US dollars and must be stated on a separate page. The total amount indicated should cover, exclusively, the international or domestic travel costs for the proposed itinerary and tuition fees, if any, including personal subsistence abroad, etc. Applicants should be realistic in compiling their estimated budgets, and consider that an average of USD1500 per month for accommodation and meals (including local transportation and incidentals) should not be exceeded. Applications where funds requested are judged to be excessive in relation to the objectives and importance of the project are likely to be considered for a smaller grant.

The following costs are not eligible: computer or equipment purchases; publication costs; attendance at conferences, unless a case can be made that such attendance is an integral part of the research and would make a direct and significant contribution to the outcome of the development of life sciences.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

All applications must be submitted with the required documentation on the prescribed and enclosed application forms. Each Member State may nominate up to a maximum of four candidatures. It is the National Commission's responsibility to select candidates that it wishes to submit to UNESCO. The National Commission is also invited to seek the cooperation of the local scientific community to ensure high standard candidatures that will then have more chances of being selected. The application(s) should reach the Fellowships Programme Section (ERC/RPO/FEL), UNESCO (7, Place de Fontenoy 75352 Paris 07P) before 30 June 2011. The application must have the following attachments:

a) The UNESCO Fellowship application form duly completed, in English or in French, in duplicate. Two recent photographs should be included with the form.

b) An e-mail address regularly used by the candidate.

c) Certified copies of degree or diplomas (including transcript of grades) in duplicate. Proof either of having obtained a Ph.D. degree or of being in the process of studying for a Ph.D. degree must be included.

d) A list of publications, if any.

e) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the candidate's work.

f) A host institute's letter of acceptance (i.e. the institute that has accepted the candidate for work should she be selected for a fellowship). This letter of acceptance must indicate the name of the academic supervisor, the date and duration, and the host institute's willingness to provide the relevant training facilities required by the candidate in the chosen field of specialization.

g) The certificate of language proficiency (on UNESCO form) duly completed in duplicate for the language of the country of study (should this be different from the candidate's mother tongue) and signed by the competent authority.

h) Detailed proposal for the research project: one to two page(s) (maximum), in either English or French.

UNESCO-L'ORÉAL INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

The UNESCO-L'Oréal International Fellowships include the following:

- The financial contribution specific previously.

- Participation in the Fellowship Training Programme.

- Round-trip travel for the selected beneficiaries from their country of residence to attend For Women in Science week in Paris, France, (date not yet determined) to attend an awards ceremony (sine qua non condition for the award of the fellowship).

- Lodging and pocket money during the stay in Paris for For Women in Science Week and the Fellowship Ceremony.

- A certificate attesting to the special award.

SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES

A special Selection Committee made up of representatives of UNESCO, the L'ORÉAL Foundation, and Life Sciences research community or institutions will make the selection of the candidates. The International Basic Science Programme (IBSP) will be also consulted during the selection process. A member of the IBSP may take part in the selection.

UNESCO and the L'ORÉAL Foundation allocate the greatest importance to originality and quality. Consideration will be given only to well-structured projects that demonstrate innovation, creativity and relevance, and which are likely to contribute to enhance knowledge in life sciences.

Files which are incomplete or which are received after the deadline for application, as well as candidatures that do not meet the requirements mentioned above, will not be taken into consideration.

Hence, Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy has launched Heydar Aliyev Fellowship. Named after Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan's national leader and visionary statesman, the fellowship is meant to prepare global leaders with strong commitment to serve public cause.

The e-learning training course provides participants with knowledge of current and future mobile communication networks focusing on radio transmissions, mobility management, Quality of Service (QoS) and self-organization principles. The e-learning course will end with an online test. Based on the activities of participants and on the online test results, the final selection of participants for the Summer Academy presence course at the Ilmenau University of Technology will be achieved. Official notification of acceptance will be sent out on March 30, 2011.

Cost and Financial Support

Participation in the Summer Academy is based on applications and is free of cost for successful applicants. Due to generous support from DAAD, the Academy provides financial support for 20 participants. This includes accommodation and an allowance to travel cost. Chinese Government Scholarship-University Postgraduate Study Program (CGS-UPSP) is established by the Ministry of Education of China (hereinafter referred to as MOE) aiming to offer support in developing international high level universities and promote Chinese higher education brand. VI. Admission and Notification
1. Zhejiang University will review all the application materials. Decisions for admission and for granting the scholarships will be made on the basis of the applicants' competitiveness, academic record and otherwise.
2. The name list of the scholarship awardees for graduate programs will be sent to China Scholarship Council for review in April, 2011.
3. After the name list is reviewed and approved by China Scholarship Council, the scholarship awardees will be notified by the university in June 2011 and Admission Notice with other relevant documents will be sent to them in July 2011.

VII. Notes
1. Scholarship students' affairs are managed according to the relevant regulations of Chinese Government Scholarship. Scholarship students must go through the Annual Review of the Chinese Government Scholarship Status.
2. Scholarship students are not allowed to change their institutions as well as their academic programs or the duration of study specified in the Admission Notice.
3. Scholarship students who have to suspend their studies due to illness must return to their home country for further treatment and recovery. Expenses for the international travel to and from the university will be borne by the students themselves, and their scholarship status will be reserved for one year at most, with the monthly living allowance stopped during the suspension. Scholarships of the students who suspend their studies for reasons other than illness will not be reserved.

From autumn 2011, students with citizenship in a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland will be required to pay tuition fees for Swedish Higher Education. At Chalmers the fees are set to SEK 140 000/year for most educations, and to 190 000/year for educations within the field of architecture.

The students that wish to study in Sweden can apply for several scholarships. At Chalmers, some of the scholarships are funded directly by Chalmers and others are provided by the Swedish Institute.

Call for applications for foreigners for Hungarian state scholarships

Through the Hungarian Scholarship Board Office, the Hungarian Minister of National Resources offers scholarships for foreign students and professors of higher education institutions as well as research fellows who intend to gain further professional experience in Hungarian institutions of higher education or research. Scholarships can be applied for under two systems:

Bilateral Agreements

The Office of the Hungarian Scholarship Board (hereinafter HSB) welcomes applications by citizens of countries (and territories) that have a valid/effective educational co-operation programme with Hungary, or a bilateral agreement signed by the Ministry of Education and Culture[1] of Hungary and the relevant ministry of the given country (or territory). Assessment and shortlisting of applications is conducted by the relevant home country (or territory) scholarship authority or Ministry of Education, as well as dissemination of all information regarding the application procedure and deadlines. The list of countries (or territories) and contact information on the partner scholarship offices can be found on our webpage (www.scholarship.hu). Although the Hungarian Scholarship Board accepts applications from these countries (or territories) submitted directly to its Office, please note that the applications evaluated and forwarded by the home country (or territory) authorities always take precedence.

General information on application (valid for both types)

Scholarship Types

The following scholarships are available in the academic year 2011/2012:

A. - semester/partial studies (3-10 months)

Can be applied for by: undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc) students, especially those majoring in Hungarian Language and Literature, as well as graduating students working on their theses, and students enrolled in „single track" university programmes (such as General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Veterinary Studies, Architecture and Jurisprudence). Before application, students are required to have completed minimum two semesters at their home institutions. For Type A scholarship, an applicant may submit an application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies, and on another occasion during his/her MA studies.

B. - postgraduate studies, research (3-21 days or 1-10 months)

Can be applied for by: applicants holding a Master's degree or an equivalent university degree, including PhD students who intend to do research for their dissertation, yet wish to stay in Hungary for less than 12 months. (However, PhD students cannot acquire credits at their host universities.)

C/1. - full PhD programme (36 months)

Only students proficient in Hungarian can apply[3], the scholarship is conditional upon successful entrance exam / admission to the respective doctoral school. C/2. - partial PhD studies (1-12 months)

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme at an accredited institution of higher education in his/her home country or in a foreign country (but not in Hungary). D. - postdoctoral studies, research (1-10 months)

Applicants must have a PhD or an equivalent degree. E. - research stay (3-21 days or 1-10 months)

For associate or higher ranking professors or for researchers holding minimum a PhD or an equivalent degree.

F. - summer courses in the summer of 2011 (1-4 weeks)

Courses must be chosen only from the list of Summer Courses 2011 published on the HSB website. You can select three different courses but your scholarship will allow you to participate only in one course.

GENERAL PROVISIONS
These scholarships allow for study or research in any field of arts and sciences during the granted period at an accredited Hungarian higher education or research institution to be determined in advance.

Semester, partial, postgraduate studies and doctoral programmes must be carried out in state-financed institutions where no tuition fee is required. For Type A scholarship, an applicant may submit an application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies, and on another occasion during his/her MA studies. Type A (semester /partial studies) and type C1/C2 (full PhD and partial PhD studies) scholarships may not be extended. Type B (postgraduate studies), D (postdoctoral studies, research), and E (research stay) scholarships may be extended exceptionally, only under special circumstances, on one occasion. The scholarships are valid only for studies and research purposes in Hungary. HSB scholarships can only be used for conducting studies or research in Hungary, which means that scholarship-holders must stay in Hungary during the whole period of their studies or research. The scholarships are awarded for the summer of 2011, or the academic year of 2011-2012, and these latter ones must be finished by 30 June 2012 at the latest. The list of partner scholarship offices, the list of summer university courses as well as other information can be found on the HSB website (www.scholarship.hu). Scholarships are awarded by the Minister of National Resources of the Republic of Hungary based on the decision of the Hungarian Scholarship Board. The list of the successful applicants will be published on the HSB website at the end of June 2011. The list of accepted candidates for the summer university courses will be published at the beginning of June 2011. Each applicant will be informed on the result in an official letter or via email.

CASES OF NON-ELIGIBILITY

-Foreign citizens with a residence permit or in the course of applying for a residence permit in Hungary cannot apply.
-Men and women, who have an employment contract or employment relationship as defined by the law in Hungary cannot apply
-Students applying for part-time or correspondence study programmes cannot apply.
-Students applying for non state-financed universities cannot apply.
-Students admitted to tuition fee-paying institutions of higher education cannot apply.

New Travel Grant Offered- history communication technology

The Mercurians, a Special Interest Group of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), is offering a travel grant of US$1,000 to defray the cost of travel and housing to use a research collection.

The Mercurians began meeting in 1986 for the purpose of generating networks between people who sharework and interests in the history of communication technologies, defining the field broadly. Our activities include publishing a semi-annual newsletter, Antenna, meeting during annual SHOT conferences, organizing paper sessions for SHOT meetings, and pursuing contacts between meetings via our Google Groups list. The newsletter serves both as a clearing house for readers and an informal forum for their ideas.

We have added this new initiative to encourage and reward high-caliber research in the history of communication technologies. One of the Mercurians' missions is to encourage scholarship in the history of communication technologies. There is no travel grant program (either within or outside SHOT) that we are aware of dedicated to supporting scholarship on the history of communication technologies. While the history of communication technology literature is vast and always growing, the quality of the research effort or resulting publication too often falls short of scholarly expectations.

The travel grant is awarded in alternating years. We anticipate presenting the first travel grant during the SHOT annual meeting November 3-6, 2011, in Cleveland.

Eligibility
The grant is intended for and limited to junior scholars meaning either current graduate students or recent postgraduates (no more than three years beyond the terminal degree in their field).

Requirements and Application
Only travel to an appropriate archival collection to carry out research on an aspect of the history of communication technology, broadly defined, will be supported. The archive can be open to the public, private, or even closed, provided that necessary permissions have been obtained from the archive.

European Master Scholarships in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics, Erasmus Mundus
The aim of the European Master in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics (FUSION-EP) programme is to provide a high-level, multinational, research-oriented education in fusion-related engineering physics, in close relation to the research activities of the partners, together with a well-integrated language and cultural experience. The combined and harmonized teaching & research of the 7 universities offers a broad range of competences in the field of fusion science and engineering physics. The Joint European Masters Programme offers a genuine European opportunity for Master level studies in a field which is of crucial importance to solving the urgent and vital problem of world energy supply.

In view of the expertise of the partners, the programme offers three programme tracks to the student: Plasma physics (fusion-oriented); Computational methods in physics; and Instrumentation and Radiation. The programme structure is combined with a mandatory stay for each student at two universities in two countries: semesters 1&2 at University A; and semesters 3 & 4 in B. Semesters 3 & 4 are in a particular track.
During semester 4 students will also attend a one month long winter school at the ITER site (attendance is compulsory). After semesters 2 & 4 a summer event is organized (attendance is compulsory) in which tracks and Master thesis topics are proposed for Master 1 students Master 2 students defend their thesis at this event. Student mobility is an inherent part of the programme structure and philosophy.

Applicants (students and scholars) from third countries (whether or not applying for a grant) will be subject to a well-defined selection procedure aimed at achieving high quality.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
Per academic year Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for FUSION-EP students from third countries are available. Nationals coming from all countries other than the 25 EU Member States (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia), the EEA-EFTA states (Island, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia and Turkey), who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries are considered "third-country nationals".

Overview
The School of Environment and Development invites applications for a fully-funded scholarship for candidates from developing countries for Master`s study by distance learning on the MSc Management and Information Systems. The scholarship will cover all study costs including tuition and examining fees and course material costs.

MSc Management and Information Systems
The MSc in M&IS develops the �hybrid� mix of management and information systems skills that we know from experience is essential to the successful and strategic application of information and communication technologies by today�s organizations.
It is designed to develop two groups of participants in developing and transitional economies: functional managers who wish to take greater control over, and make a more direct contribution to, change in their organizations via the development and implementation of information systems; and information systems professionals who wish to improve the success rate of the information systems they develop or use, and who may also wish to upgrade their management skills and knowledge.
The programme is offered by IDPM`s Development Informatics Group, with staff members contributing to the University`s Centre for Development Informatics.

Who studies on this programme?
The MSc M&IS programme is available through distance learning so that practitioners can study while continuing to work in their ongoing professional roles, in the public, private and civil society sectors, or in roles in international organizations, agencies or NGOs. Students work alongside their MSc study, and complete the programme part-time, typically in about two-and-a-half years.

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?
The scholarships are intended to support students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study for a UK qualification. Applicants should:
Be a national of and resident in a developing country of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America or Oceania.
Have at least two years` work experience in a post relevant to their MSc M&IS studies.
Hold a UK second class honours, upper division, or above, or its international equivalent, in their Bachelor`s degree.
Applicants must not have previously studied in a developed country (short/language courses excluded).

Internship for communications and outreach

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is looking
for an intern to join its outreach and communication activities for a
period of at least 4 months between January and June 2011.

As an intern you will have the opportunity to work closely with the SIPRI
communications and editorial team during an exciting period. During the
period of the internship, SIPRI will be preparing its renowned Yearbook
and will release its key data sets on international arms transfers, arms
production and worldwide military expenditure. These media launches
traditionally attract wide international media coverage.

You will help to assemble and develop the contents of the Yearbook,
prepare background media material, draft press releases, follow up with
journalists, facilitate interviews, help make media material available
through the webside and facebook, help setting up launch events, help

The Quota Scheme

The Norwegian Quota Scheme is a funding scheme offered by the Norwegian Government to students from developing countries, Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia for studies at institutions of higher education in Norway.

.Nationality

Applicants from countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and developing countries are eligible to apply for Quota funding. Applicants who live in another country than their country of citizenship, either temporarily or permanently, can not apply.

Institutional Cooperation

Applicants from institutions with which the University of Oslo has a formal cooperation agreement are eligible to apply. Preference is given to applicants who are linked to active and ongoing formalized cooperation/projects within the specific subject area.

Study programmes

Quota applicants may apply for selected Master's degree programmes and PhD programmes. Applicants studying Scandinavian studies in their home countries may also apply for a one-year advanced Norwegian language programme.

Quota funding

Quota funding covers student housing and basic living expences for one person during the study period. The funding is given as part loan/part grant by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. After completing the programme and returning to the student's home country, the loan part is converted to a scholarship. If residence is taken in Norway within ten years after termination of studies, the scholarship is converted back to a loan and must be repaid.

Quota Scheme

The Quota Scheme is Norway's and NTNU's largest loan and scholarship scheme for financing students from eligible developing countries, and countries in Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia.

You may be eligibile for Quota Scheme support if you are either a student or temporarily or permanently employed at one of the institutions where NTNU has a collaborative agreement. These institutions are mainly found in developing countries or in Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia. Please refer to the list of institutions:

To be ellgible, you must also have stayed at least one year in your home country directly prior to when you plan to undertake your education at NTNU or any other Norwegian university/ college. That means you cannot apply for financial support directly from a country than your own.

NTNU has been granted 168 seats (157 for developing countries, and 11 for Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia) for the academic years 2008-2009, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011.However, there are only about 60-65 new seats each year under the Quota Scheme at NTNU. The rest of NTNU's Quota Scheme seats are used for students who are already admitted at our university, and who need renewal of Quota Scheme support to complete their studies.

The few Quota Scheme seats available, compared with the very high number of applicants competing for new seats, makes this source of funding support extremely competitive. Only very qualified candidates from collaborating institutions will therefore be offered admission.

An excellent PhD opportunity is available for a joint project with the Weather
and Energy Research Unit at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research
Organisation (CSIRO) and the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the
Australian National University in the area of Solar Radiation and Energy.

The appointed PhD student will develop a solar radiation and energy forecasting
system aimed at improving the way in which solar energy produced by a selection
of energy devices is integrated into the electricity grid. Such a system may
eventually be implemented operationally by bodies such as the Australian Energy
Market Operator and/or solar power farms operators.

The Government of the Czech Republic offers a number of scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance Programme in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.

These so called Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study:

1) in Bachelor/Master study programmes plus one-year preparatory course of the Czech language (which is combined with other field-specific training). Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools who can enrol only in study programmes in which they follow instruction in the Czech language. Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to take entrance examinations at the respective institution of higher education. Scholarship applications together with the required attachments are to be submitted to the appropriate Czech Embassy in the applicant's country before the deadline set by the Embassy so that the applicants' dossiers reach the respective Czech authorities (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport) by 15 January each year.

Students who, at the time of application, stay in the Czech Republic may submit the respective documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department for Development Co-operation, by 31 December of the preceding year at the latest.

Foreign nationals who have been granted permanent residence in the Czech Republic are not eligible to apply for Government scholarships.

A limited number of scholarships is offered to students from developing countries who file their applications with the respective National UNESCO Commissions. Call for Indonesia Research Fellows for January-June 2011

The (HKS) Indonesia Program invites Indonesian researchers, academics, and practitioners to apply for Indonesia Research Fellowships for the period January 15 to June 15, 2011 in order to pursue independent research projects at the Rajawali Foundation Institute for Asia, which is part of the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation of the Harvard Kennedy School. Successful applicants will join a lively community of researchers working on Asia-related issues.

* Appointments will run from January 15 to June 15, 2011.
* With instructor approval, Research Fellows may "audit" classes at the Harvard Kennedy School or other Harvard schools.
* Research Fellows will receive a certificate upon completion, but no degrees will be conferred.
* Indonesian Research Fellows will receive shared office space within the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.
* Fellows will have access to the library system of Harvard University.
* For Indonesian Research Fellows, HKS will provide or pay for appropriate housing, health insurance, and a modest living stipend. HKS will not provide international transportation or pay for pre-departure costs. Criteria and Expectations

Fellows must be fluent in both written and spoken English. All fellows will be expected to participate in research seminars, produce a ten-page written paper summarizing their research, and to make at least two presentations (one in the Cambridge area and at least one in Indonesia) about their research.

Indonesian Research Fellowships are open to candidates from government, academia, and independent research communities. Preference will be given to candidates whose proposed area of research is linked to the Research Priorities of the HKS Indonesia Program.

We are seeking five PhD students across a range of system topics. We are seeking two PhD students to investigate the implications of photonic networks on future large-scale computer systems (such as data centres or scientific computers) with a focus on power consumption reduction. The work will involve modelling large systems of chip multiprocessors with photonic interconnect using FPGA-based emulation. These two positions are funded by the EPRSC grant EP/I004157/1, (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/I004157/1)

We are seeking a further three PhD students for the 'INTelligent Energy awaRE NETworks' (INTERNET) project whose vision is to reduce the carbon footprint of ICT networks by at least an order of magnitude - along with a corresponding reduction in non-renewable energy consumption. PhD students would perform complimentary work across topics including: the investigation of energy-aware network protocol design and implementation for the migration of virtualised systems, performing research into the models of energy usage of networks in and between data centres, and the design and implementation of novel hardware-software interfaces. Graduates of all disciplines with a university degree qualifying for doctoral studies.

Requirements

•we expect your research project to make an important contribution to the corresponding research field (please outline this in a research exposé of 5 pages)

•clearly above average university degree

•uninterrupted studies (in case your total study period took more than 13 semester/ 6,5 years please explain in the application form)

•the start of your doctoral research project should not extend a period of time of 12 months with reference to the application deadline; we concede reasonable exceptions – please explain in the application form

•the university degree qualifying for doctoral studies has to be submitted at the latest until November 10, 2010 before the applications will be given to the faculties for further survey and expertise (Bachelor degree in case of fast track procedure plus information about grades already obtained in the master studies)

•candidates who have to fulfil additional requirements are also allowed to apply for a grant (first supervisor is responsible for compatibility between fulfilment of requirements and successful doctorate)

•candidates with a Bachelor degree involved in the fast track procedure are also allowed to apply for a grant; the official admission to doctoral studies from the faculty has to be submitted before the funding will start

Admission process and decision (2 stage process)

•on the basis of this preliminary ranking the Executive Board will invite the best candidates (January 2011) for a research colloquium

•research colloquium and the ensuing choice and recommendation by the rapporteurs will take place on February 7, 2011

•the final decision of the Executive Board will be made on February 9, 2011

Type of funding and amount

The grant amounts to 1.000,- Euro per month, children`s allowance amounts to 100,- Euro per month in addition.

Period of funding and of approval

Max. 36 months of funding are provided, whereas the period of first approval comprises 12 months. We offer 2 times for prolongation – each comprising 12 months - after having reviewed the progress reports.

Interruption

In case of illness the grant will be paid for further 6 weeks. In case of pregnancy the grant payment will be intermitted for a time period of 14 weeks (6 weeks before and 8 weeks after childbirth). The approval may be extended for this period of time respectively.

Secondary employment

During the funding period a short-time work of max. 6 hours per week is allowed

Duties of the grantee

•participation in the structured doctoral training programme of the Research School, follow the Individual Training and Supervision Plan of the Research School, take actively part in the Research School

•communicate immediately all important changes of the personal conditions as well as interruptions, changes or abandonment of the research project

A PhD studentship in Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is available following the award of the recent European Union FP7 research project COMET - Content Mediator Architecture for Content-aware Networks. Funding is available to support overseas fees and stipend costs for a period of three years. We are looking to recruit a very high calibre PhD student to work in this emerging area of crucial importance. While the fundamental Internet protocols were originally designed to enable host-to-host communication, the vast majority of the current Internet interactions address user-content access (web, content delivery networks, video/photo sharing sites, etc.) or user-user communication (voice over IP, text-based chatting, etc.) As such, many researchers are currently considering evolutionary and revolutionary new architectures that will better support content-centric operation. Evolutionary approaches operate in the application layer and start from previous content-delivery architectures while revolutionary approaches examine radical new network architectures focus on user-content and also support user-user interaction. The emerging content-centric networking area has started receiving significant attention worldwide, with an underlying belief that it will lead to a CCN-oriented Future Internet.
This area brings together new naming architectures, dynamic content caching, anycast communication and better-than-best-effort quality of service among other constituents and potentially involves new protocol design, modelling, implementation and evaluation for the best support of efficient content access. The PhD student will work in the context of the COMET project team and will benefit from (and contribute to) relevant ongoing research.
The studentship available will be supported by UCL and the COMET project (Content Mediator Architecture for Content-aware Networks), see http://www.comet-project.org/ COMET looks at both evolutionary and revolutionary approaches for future CCNs, starting from an overlay-based content mediation plane and examining potential approaches to realise this natively in network routers for the future Internet. As such, we are looking for candidates with excellent computer and/or electronic engineering background while strong analytical/mathematical skills will be a significant advantage. Experience of research, design/development and evaluation on networking, network management, ns-2 simulator, Linux, Java, C/C++ or similar would be desirable.
The studentship is available for three years and covers overseas tuition fees, plus a stipend at c. £15,000 pa (tax free), increasing with inflation. We are looking for the prospective student to start in October 2010 or at the latest in January 2011. As such, a selection may be made before the closing date of the 30 September 2010.

The Process Systems Engineering Group at School of Engineering, Cranfield University is a small vibrant multidisciplinary team. We are seeking to strengthen the research team in the area of modelling and simulation for energy processes such as power plants and CO₂ capture technologies.
A project is funded by Biomass and Fossil Fuel Research Alliance (BF2RA). The project is aimed at investigating whether a supercritical power plant with post-combustion CO₂ capture plant can satisfy the UK Grid requirements. The study will be carried out through modelling and simulation. A major power generation company in the UK will be closely involved.
The candidate sought is expected to have a strong interest in modelling and simulation for power generation systems and preferably with thermal energy or chemical engineering background. Good understanding of power generation principles and exposure to chemical engineering are desirable. The PhD studentship is expected to start from 1^st Nov. 2010.
Academic Qualifications:
We are looking to recruit a very high calibre PhD student. The candidate must be able to demonstrate "a capability to undertake and benefit from research training through to completion, to the standard necessary to qualify for a PhD." This normally requires an upper second class honours degree, or a combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to that level.
